The Virgin Mary Cult

Sermons

As an ex-Catholic there were many things I used to believe but found out were not true when I read the Bible, even my Catholic Bible at the time contradicted what I believed to be true after years of indoctrination in Catholic schools. The Bible alone was enough proof to leave the Catholic religion. Of course there are many other problems such as the high number of priests raping children and bishops covering it up which I believe is making more Catholics become atheists than anything else. One false teaching we are going to look at is the Catholic teaching that Mary is the “Ever-Virgin” which is a big deal to those who venerate aka worship her. We were taught to pray facing the Ever-Virgin Mary statues in class. We were taught that the Virgin Mary was always a virgin even after Jesus was born. In fact the Catholic Catechism teaches it as doctrine in Catechism 499:

499 The deepening of faith in the virginal motherhood led the Church to confess Mary’s real and perpetual virginity even in the act of giving birth to the Son of God made man.154 In fact, Christ’s birth “did not diminish his mother’s virginal integrity but sanctified it.”155 And so the liturgy of the Church celebrates Mary as Aeiparthenos, the “Ever-virgin”. Catholic Catechism

As a Catholic I wanted to learn more about the Bible so I decided to just start reading it. I started in Matthew and one of the first things I noticed was that this doctrine was contradicted immediately. The Bible teaches that Mary was a virgin when she became pregnant with Jesus. Mary said to the angel:

“30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” Luke 1:30-35

Mary did not “know” any man, that means she never had any sexual relations with any man at this point in time, she was a virgin. Unlike most women today Mary was not a whore who had sex before marriage. It was frowned on much more back then so of course she was nervous being pregnant before being married to Joseph. The Bible teaches that Joseph waited to “know” his wife until after Jesus was born:

“24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.” Matthew 1:24-25

There is no disputing what the Bible says here it can not be denied. Of course some Catholics who worship Mary (many actually do worship her) will try and twist and say that they did not mean sexual relationships by the word “know”, they just got married. The Bible proves the twisting wrong as well because in numerous places it mentions a husband and wife “knowing” each other and resulting in children:

“And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.” Genesis 4:1

“And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” Genesis 4:25

The above verses prove that in the Bible a husband and wife “knowing” each other is sexual in nature. Joseph waited to know his wife until Jesus was born to fulfill the prophecy of a virgin bringing forth a child, Jesus’ miraculous birth. The Bible even teaches that Jesus had brothers and sisters in Matthew 12, Mark 3, Luke 8 and Acts 1. By saying this it is nothing against Mary at all who was the most blessed woman to ever live and is in Heaven today. Lying about her and turning her into a perpetual virgin goddess like the Catholics do is actually what is unfair to her memory and unfair to Jesus. The Bible says we can not be adding things to scripture or there is Hell to pay:

“18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” Revelation 22:18-19

It doesn’t matter what the Roman Catholic Catechism says, what the pope says, what the priests say, what matters is what the Word of God says. Thank God for His Word, we need to humble ourselves and let it correct us to avoid being stuck in cults that teach false doctrine and favor traditions over truth.
