“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” Luke 13:3
Jesus is very clear that we must repent of our sin and become born again Christians. This is one thing that holds many back from becoming Christians. They know in their heart that they want to be saved and love Jesus, they just can not imagine overcoming the sin in their life that they love so much. They see it as an impossible feat to repent and it can actually lead people into severe depression. Sometimes they are just too prideful to admit that they need help.
Jesus is willing to help anyone overcome sin. In fact it can not be done without Him. Just think about a difficult situation someone may encounter at work where they can not figure out a problem. It can be difficult to ask for help but once a person humbles himself and asks for help with the issue he is facing and gets the help he needs and the problem resolved, he ends up very glad he asked for help and may have even learned something. This is an act of humility and this is exactly what Jesus will do for someone when they admit they just need help overcoming their sin problem:
“But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” James 4:5
So by humbling yourself before Jesus, admitting you are a sinner and can not by any means save yourself or overcome the sin that you can not imagine your life without, you will get grace from Jesus. This grace is not a license to stay in that sin, it is the exact opposite, it is the ticket out because the grace is what will teach you to break free:
“11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;” Titus 2:11-12
The grace that you will get from Jesus by humbling yourself and crying out to Him will not just be what teaches you to overcome your sin and live a Christian life separate from the world, it will also save you from Hell:
“8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast” Ephesians 2:8-9
A lot of people will not repent because they do not know this and do not believe they can ever overcome the addiction to sin that they are in. It is as simple as asking for help. Jesus is not going to say no to that. In fact He wants you to ask Him. Jesus wants us to overcome sin through Him, it is what He came to this earth for:
“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” Romans 8:37
So if you find yourself in a position where you want to be saved but feel hopeless, like you have repeatedly failed, do not give up. Just swallow your pride and humble yourself and call on the Name of Jesus for help. If you are too proud to do that then you actually are hopeless.
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” James 4:10
