God Hates Graven Images

“4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;” Exodus 20:4-5

That is the Second Commandment. God forbids us from making statues to bow and pray to them, He does not want us to be like the heathen nations that prayed to statues or images. It does not matter if that image is supposed to represent the God of The Bible, the Israelites tried that with the golden calf and some of them seemed to believe the calf represented the actual God of Israel because they made burnt offerings to it in honor of a feast of the LORD which would be God:

“3 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. 4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 5 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD. 6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.” Exodus 32:3-6

Today it is common to see statues and images used as items of worship in many false religions. Buddhists and Hindus have all kinds of weird idols that they pray to. Catholics pray to Mary statues, saint statues, relics, Jesus statues and even burnt pieces of toast that look like Mary to them. Many will claim they do not worship or pray to them and only “venerate” them but regardless of what they say they do it is still wrong. Many times Catholics believe that by praying in front of, bowing to, kissing or touching a Mary statue it can do something for them and that is where it becomes an idol which does nothing but anger God. The true Biblical Mary who was the most blessed woman that ever lived would still not want people praying to her. God says to get rid of these idols and likens them to dirty feminine products:

“22 Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence.” Isaiah 30:22

God does not want to be represented by images made by men for the reason that the image can not represent His glory and His glory can be stolen and cheapened by these images. He is very clear about this in the Bible:

“29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device. 30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:” Acts 17:29-30

The only good Mary statue is a smashed one. Same with any idol that people use in veneration they should be destroyed and smashed (This does not mean that Christians should go around and destroy other people’s property but we should encourage them to read the truth in the Bible about it). The Catholic Church should be ashamed of itself for leading so many souls astray. There is a lot of money in religious statues and artifacts in the Catholic Church. How can one of these idols help you? The Bible teaches you are a heathen if you trust in these idols and are just like them, dead spiritually:

“15 The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. 16 They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; 17 They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths.18 They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them.” Psalms 135:15-18

A lot of times idols and statues are seen as a way to control a deity. Many times superstitions, incantations and rituals go along with the use of statues, it was very common as a Catholic to see this. This is not how God operates and He can not be even close to contained by some stupid image. Jesus tells us the truth:

“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” John 4:24
