Black Friday

Black Friday is a day of shopping chaos where people go to the extremes to get the best deals they can on anything. And while it is not a sin to want to get the most for your money it can also enter into sin territory when people are stampeding over eachother and fighting over TVs, phones, computers or anything. Some people will even camp out in the harsh elements and wait in line for days to be the first one through the doors. Unfortunately people have been killed on several occasions on this day. Getting a good deal becomes idolatry on Black Friday for many people.

“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” Luke 12:15

It is sad because many of these people are hard workers and just want to get a gift for someone or save some money but the stores that do this are just as guilty in this idolatry. People turn into maniacs over getting something at a heavily reduced price, what would happen if everything on Black Friday was free? They would probably have to call in the National Guard to police the people because the lines and fighting would not stop otherwise. All of this for just temporal things.

“Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:” Colossians 3:5

Jesus offers us a free gift of salvation which is the ultimate good deal gift. It lasts for eternity, doesn’t need batteries, doesn’t need updates, has an unlimited supply available and is free to anyone who asks for it. You would think that if people are busting down the doors of Best Buy for a heavily discounted flat screen TV that they would be busting down the doors of churches to learn more about being saved.

“Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.” John 4:10

The reason that many ignore and put off this gift that Jesus paid such a heavy price for on the cross is because they become ensnared with the cares of the world and it is understandable based on the bombardment of consumerism all around us. If someone could see eternity for one second then it would become the most dire situation they are in the fact that they will die on this earth one day and live forever either in Heaven or Hell. Although that would probably cause a rush much larger than Black Friday shopping it is not what God wants, God wants us to have faith, if we see something then it is no more believing by faith but by sight.

“8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

If you are reading this article and you have not received the gift of salvation yet, it is time that you do. Repent of your sins and believe in Jesus Christ. On Black Friday the special sales expire after a certain time period. Jesus has unlimited gifts of salvation to give but the problem is that like Black Friday the deal will eventually expire and that is at your last breath if you have not yet received it.

“20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” Luke 12:20-2
