Biblical Preaching Guide
As Christians why are we supposed to preach? What are we supposed to preach? Where should we preach at and who should we preach to? When is it appropriate to preach? How are we supposed to go about preaching and finding the correct method? The Bible says we are to preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified. The Bible also gives us answers to all these questions.
WHY we preach: To the world preaching seems foolish but it is by the foolishness of preaching which pleases God and that is what He uses to get His message across. This is why we preach:
“21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;” 1 Corinthians 1:21-23
WHAT to preach: All through the Bible we have instructions on what to preach and how to preach. Jesus tells us we need to preach repentance as well:
“46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” Luke 24:46-47
WHERE and WHO to preach to: Jesus also tells us in the Bible where to preach and who to preach to and the severity and importance of preaching. Jesus does not leave anyone or anywhere out:
“15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” Mark 16:15-16
WHEN to preach: The Bible also tells us when we are to preach, we are told to always be ready and not hold back:
“2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.” 2 Timothy 4:2
HOW to preach: One of the biggest areas where Christians disagree is this topic, the how. Some are lead to preach in a loving calm style and believe anyone who doesn’t have the love of God and some are lead to preach hellfire and brimstone and believe anyone who doesn’t is lukewarm and sissified. Both of these ideas are wrong, God gifts and prepares everyone differently, He has His ministers preaching several different ways to reach all different types of lost people, some need their hands held and prayed with and some need to be rebuked and have the fear of God put in them.
“21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. 22 And of some have compassion, making a difference: 23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.” Jude 21-23
There are many other examples in the Bible, these are just at least one each for the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How topics which should leave us without excuse for not knowing how to do our job and preach the Word.
